This Privacy Policy describes how Dakota Labs LLC ("Dakota Labs," "we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, and handles information when you use Tally at tally.dakota-labs.com. Tally is a web application — it runs in your browser and does not require any mobile app installation.
We do not sell your personal data. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not build profiles for third-party targeting. Full stop.
1. Information We Collect
Birthdate. The core function of Tally requires your birthdate. This is the only piece of personal information required to use the app. It is used to calculate your life statistics. If you are signed in, it is saved to your account on our servers and stored with each question you save. If you use Tally as a guest, it is not saved to our database; it is kept in the tally_dob cookie in your browser (for 1 year), which your browser sends to our server with each request. For everyone, your birthdate is also part of the page address (for example, /1990-01-31), so a link you share, and its preview image, contain your birthdate.
Account information. If you choose to sign in, we collect the minimum information needed to create your account:
- Google Sign-In: Your Google account ID, email address, and display name.
- Sign in with Apple: Your Apple user ID, and the email address and display name Apple shares with us.
- Email & password: Your email address and a securely hashed password (we never store your password in plain text).
Where your account lives. Your account (email address, display name, password hash, Google or Apple ID, sign-in session records, whether your email is verified, and any password-reset tokens) is held by Dakota Labs' shared account service, which other Dakota Labs apps also use.
Saved stats and preferences. If you are signed in, we store the life statistics you generate (including your questions and the AI-generated responses), your tone preference (Contemplative, Wry, or Celebratory), and your view preference (grid or list). This lets you pick up where you left off on any device.
Payment information. If you purchase Tally's one-time unlock, payment is processed by Stripe. We do not receive or store your payment card details. Stripe handles the card data, creates a customer record, and sends your receipt. From Stripe we receive and store your email address, the amount, the currency, and a payment reference, which we use to record the unlock on your account.
Sign-in cookies. When you sign in, the sign-in system sets a session cookie (HttpOnly) to keep you signed in, plus short-lived security cookies during sign-in itself (a CSRF token, the address to return to, and OAuth state). These cookies are strictly necessary for authentication and are exempt from cookie consent requirements. We do not use tracking cookies or advertising cookies.
Functional cookies. Tally also sets the following functional cookies that remember your preferences: tally_dob (remembers your birthdate for guest users, expires after 1 year), tally_tone (your tone preference, expires after 1 year), and tally_view (your view mode preference, expires after 1 year). These are functional cookies that do not track you and do not require consent.
Basic usage data. We may log basic request data (errors, response times) to keep the service running. This is not linked to your identity for any advertising or profiling purpose. Tally's own code does not store IP addresses and uses no analytics, advertising, or error-tracking service. Our hosting providers (Railway and Cloudflare) keep standard request logs, which can include your IP address and the page address you requested; because the page address contains your birthdate, these logs can include it too.
2. How We Use Your Information

- To generate AI-powered custom stats based on your questions
- To create and maintain your account across devices
- To save your stats and preferences so you don't lose them
- To process your one-time purchase and unlock premium features
- To keep the service secure and running
- To comply with legal obligations
We do not use your information for advertising, profiling, or any purpose beyond operating Tally.
3. Third-Party Services
Stripe. Payment processing for the one-time $0.99 unlock. Stripe handles all card data under their own privacy policy, creates a customer record, and sends your receipt. From Stripe we receive and store your email address, the amount, the currency, and a payment reference. Stripe's privacy policy: stripe.com/privacy.
Google (Sign-In). If you choose Google Sign-In, Google authenticates you and passes us your Google account ID, email address, and display name. Google's privacy policy governs what Google collects. We receive only what Google passes to us.
Apple (Sign in with Apple). If you choose Apple Sign-In, Apple authenticates you and passes us a stable user identifier and the email address and display name it shares with us. Apple's privacy policy governs what Apple collects.
Groq (AI Generation). Custom life stats are generated through Dakota Labs' own AI service, which sends the request to Groq's language model API. With each question we send: the question text, up to the three most recent turns of the same conversation, your date of birth, your age, and the number of days you have been alive. Your email address, name, and account ID are not sent. Groq's privacy policy: groq.com/privacy-policy.
Resend (Email). Verification and password-reset emails are sent through Resend, which receives your email address and the message. Resend's privacy policy: resend.com/legal/privacy-policy.
Railway (Backend Hosting). Railway hosts the Tally app and its database. Your account data and saved stats are stored on Railway-managed servers. Railway does not access your data for its own purposes.
Cloudflare. Our DNS and web traffic pass through Cloudflare's network for performance and security. Cloudflare may log request metadata per their own policy.
4. Data Retention
We retain your account data and saved stats for as long as your account is active. If you request account deletion, we will delete your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
Guest usage (no account) does not save your birthdate to our database. It is kept in the tally_dob cookie in your browser for up to 1 year, and is cleared when you clear your browser data. Your browser sends it to our server with each request, and it is part of the page address.
5. Data Security
We use industry-standard practices to protect your data: HTTPS/TLS for all connections, an HttpOnly session cookie, bcrypt for password hashing (cost factor 12), and access controls on our backend systems. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure — we cannot guarantee absolute security.
6. Your Rights and Choices
Access and correction. Contact us to request access to your personal data or to correct inaccurate information.
Deletion. You can delete your account directly from within the app via account settings. When you do, your Tally data (your saved birthdate, preferences, and saved questions and answers) is deleted at once, and your account in Dakota Labs' shared account service is deleted. That account is shared across Dakota Labs apps, so deleting it also deletes your account and data in the other Dakota Labs apps you use (for example, Beau). Records of your purchase are kept but unlinked from you and anonymized. Stripe keeps its own records of the payment under its own policy. You may also request deletion by emailing [email protected], and we will process your request within 30 days.
Cookies. You can sign out at any time to clear your session cookie. Clearing your browser cookies also removes it.
Google / Apple access. You can revoke Tally's access to your Google or Apple account at any time via your Google or Apple account security settings.
7. Children's Privacy
Tally is intended for users 13 years of age and older. Tally does not accept a birthdate that makes you younger than 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of Tally after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
